David is an experienced counsellor and clinical supervisor with over 12 years of practice across diverse settings, including acute and long-term counselling, men’s behaviour change programs, trauma-informed work, pastoral care, and school-based counselling.
His work is increasingly focused on supporting men who have used unhelpful behaviours (including violence, control, or abuse) in their family and intimate relationships. David works with men to understand themselves, take responsibility for their behaviour, understand the impact of their actions, and develop safer, more respectful ways of relating to partners, children, and others.
David’s approach is structured, reflective, and grounded in accountability. He does not view violence or abuse as inevitable or excusable, nor as an identity. Instead, he understands these behaviours as choices shaped by beliefs, expectations, and patterns that can be examined and changed when men are supported to do so within clear boundaries.
Alongside responsibility, David brings a calm and respectful therapeutic presence. He works collaboratively with clients to slow thinking, challenge rigid beliefs about gender and power, and support men to develop insight, emotional regulation, and relational skills that prioritise safety and dignity for others.
In addition to his direct client work, David is a Clinical Supervisor providing supervision to mental health clinicians and Pastoral, Ministry, and Chaplaincy practitioners. He supports professionals to work safely and thoughtfully with complex presentations, particularly where risk, power, and family safety are central considerations. His supervision style is reflective, practice-focused, and attentive to ethical responsibility.
Through Who Matters – counselling and supervision, David is also developing resources and training to support practitioners who are new to working with men who use violence or harmful behaviours. His aim is to contribute to stronger, more consistent practice that centres accountability, child and victim-survivor safety, and meaningful behaviour change.
